Additional Information About the Day:

Board Fundamentals Workshop – This four-hour workshop equips attendees with practical knowledge of the essential functions of a Board of Directors. In addition to understanding a board member’s responsibilities, attendees will gain valuable insights into building effective relationships within the organization and be given the tools needed to conduct an initial review of a Board of Directors. Attendees will receive a 20-page handout with workshop content and links to resources.

Topics discussed in the workshop include:

  • The roles and responsibilities of board members
  • The legal obligations of board members and policies that can support these obligations
  • Developing a constructive partnership between the board chair and executive leadership
  • Support to evaluate the composition of an organization’s Board of Directors

Social Capital and the Sector Roundtable – Social scientist Robert Putnam defines social capital as features of social organization, such as networks, norms, and social trust that facilitate coordination and cooperation for mutual benefit.” Inspired by Putnam’s research, can nonprofits harness the power of networks and trust to build stronger connections, increase community involvement, and drive sustained impact?

In this two-hour roundtable, participants will consider the idea of social capital and discuss how the power of social capacity could better the ways in which nonprofit organizations engage board members, donors, volunteers, those directly impacted by the mission, and the broader community.
